“This journey began with a phone conversation with a Chikankari artisan seeking work during lockdown. We were brainstorming how we could provide assistance. was working with a brand and researching business ideas, and that’s when everything was in place and House of Chikankari started in the basement of my house,” Poonam Rawal said.
Aakriti Rawal started researching Chikankari technology to find out all about it. He witnesses the decline of handicrafts and the decline of craftsmen. She noticed that very few people were doing large-scale chikankari online. Aakriti Rawal said:
The duo started the business in October 2020 with a team of 15 people and moved to a bigger location in 2021 with more employees. Currently, over 70 employees work together, Poonam is responsible for operations and quality checks, while Aakriti focuses on marketing, business development and finance of the company. Our full-fledged team is staffed from marketing officers to dispatch executives. However, the duo have their own set of challenges.
Challenges we face
Aakriti said: It was difficult to explain e-commerce because I had transaction experience at physical stores. Lack of knowledge about the Internet was a challenge. It took me almost a year and a half to work in a certain way. It was a lot of work explaining to them that we were building a brand and that quality assurance was the biggest part of that. But while many understand us today, there are days when we struggle. ”
Another challenge for them is keeping the team motivated and pushing them to achieve more. According to Aakriti, they have this culture of working as a team, and only they will stick with the company if they grow on an individual level. Poonam also said that love is what everyone needs at work and at home and we try to give it.
About working with her mother as a business partner, Aakriti said:The best thing about working with moms is to not hold a grudge. Of course, there are disagreements and conflicts within the team. But we will find out why. Second, we have expertise in very different sets of skills, so we complement each other and learn art from each other. “
Regarding the company’s first round of funding, Aakriti noted: We didn’t want to take the money unless we proved ourselves better than anyone else.After coming out of the basement when our spending increased, we asked his father for an investment.
