Google’s John Mueller answered a question about how Google’s new Google Lens multisearch will affect SEO. How multi-search in Google Lens affects search engine optimization is a good question and John provided a thoughtful answer.

The multisearch feature was announced as a beta feature on April 7, 2022. Beta generally means that something is still being developed and tested, but has reached a point where it is stable enough to be used.
Google says the multisearch feature uses AI and is still looking into integrating the MUM algorithm.
The Google MUM Algorithm is a powerful technology that uses audio, video, images, and text to answer complex questions and uses information to return answers regardless of language.

Searching with images can be thought of as searching for exactly what the image contains, like an exact match search.
Searching by image and text allows users to: Refine your searchsuch as searching for different colors of what is contained in the image.
Google’s new multi-search announcement used the following search refinement examples:
- “Screenshot a stylish orange dress and add the query ‘green’ to search in a different color
- Take a picture of the dining set and add the query “coffee table” to find matching tables
- Take a picture of your rosemary and add the query ‘care instructions’.
How does multisearch affect SEO?
John Mueller read the question on the Google SEO Office Hours Hangout.
This is the question Muller read:
“How does multisearch in Google Lens affect my SEO?”
John Mueller first responded by explaining that multi-search in Google Lens is still new.
“I mean… this is still pretty new and I think that’s how multisearch works.
We recently did a blog post about this. You can do that in Chrome for example, and many different kinds of phones.
Basically what happens is that you can take a picture of any image from a website and you can search using that image.
For example, if you find a particular … clothes or … basically anything and want to find out more information about it, you can highlight that section of the image and then search for more similar ones. “
SEO and multisearch
Mueller next discussed SEO in the context of multisearch.
“And from an SEO standpoint, there’s really nothing you do manually to make it work.
Rather, if your images are indexed, we can find your images and highlight them when people are searching this way.
So there is no such thing as a direct impact on SEO.
But if you’re doing everything right and your content is found in search and your content has images and those images are related, it’s like you can direct people to those images or content in different ways .
SEO and multisearch
John Mueller said there are no new SEO features specifically related to multisearch. SEO best practices SEO for content and images.
However, in my opinion, Google Multisearch may need to take new actions related to SEO, such as rethinking its content and image strategy now that Google Lens is part of the mix.
From an SEO perspective, we recommend using the Google Lens app to see if your images actually show up for relevant queries.
Another thing to research is to see which competitors are ranking in Google Lens.
The advent of multisearch suggests that in addition to applying various image best practices such as Google Discover recommended images and structured data, it may be helpful to consider using images on web pages. (if the image is not already used effectively).
