The domain used for this demonstration is smythstoys.com, one of the UK’s leading online toy retailers. This is a large site, with over 600,000 backlinks and over 15,000 referring domains, with monthly visits he is estimated at 16.4 million.

The first port of call when commencing link management activities is backlink analysis tool. Provides a top-level overview, including insight into the authoritativeness of the site.
Below you can see the overview screen itself showing the various data and metrics available.
One of the great things about Semrush is the graphical nature of each dashboard. Easy access to a lot of data on one screen. For example, we can see that:
- authority score
- Referral domain count
- number of backlinks
- Estimated Monthly Visits
- top anchor text
- Follow-to-no-follow ratio
- top page
- anchor text word
- Referencing domains by authority score
This means you can quickly assess a site’s credibility in seconds and identify areas that need attention.
The dashboard is very easy to navigate, and various charts give you a quick (but detailed insight) into the nature of each domain you want to investigate.
For example, at a glance we can see that there has been a steady stream of referring domains over the past year, with a slight decline last month. You can then create actionable tasks based on this information (for example, speed up link building).
How to find new links
One of the most common tasks anyone who does day-to-day backlink management wants to find is newly discovered links.
Backlink analysis makes this very easy.Just click on the second tab from the marked overview screen back link filter by new.
There’s also a handy hyperlink from the overview screen to each day’s newly discovered link if you want to see the data right away. handy or something?
This helps in so many ways.
If you have a digital PR activity or want to know which high-traffic publications you’ve linked to recently, use this tool to find new incoming links, such as those from The Sun last month .
Data updates are also very fast. For example, another link from the same publication here has a publication date of June 10, 2021.
According to data from the Semrush tool, the link is First Look Five days before the time of writing, i.e. June 12, 2021, so two days after it was first published.
In fact, according to our Q1 and Q2 test runs of this year, the Semrush link database outperforms the competition in terms of which tool found the first new backlink the fastest.
The example below demonstrates how Semrush can display a link at 9:40am to content that went live only at 9:00am the same morning.
Benchmark against competitors
Who are your competitors?
Knowing how far you are behind or ahead of your competitors is a key insight that informs your overall link building strategy.

Best place? You don’t even have to declare a competitor. Semrush does the heavy lifting for you by finding similar sites within the same niche.
Once complete, Semrush provides useful authority metrics (e.g. referring domains, backlinks, IPs, monthly visits, ranking keywords).
One cool feature is that when you select the site you want to compare, all charts update with competitor metrics data, giving you a valuable picture of your site and competitors.
Then you can extract insights. For example, the competitor with the highest traffic score may have the highest referring domain count and authority score.
Additionally, the exemplary way the data is presented allows you to see trends such as increasing or decreasing your competitors’ link building activity.
Sites that link to your competitors but not to you
Here’s another very useful feature:
After running Competitive Analysis in Overview Mode, scroll down to Top Link Building Opportunities Widgets that can be navigated directly backlink gap and find a host of potential outreach targets.
We see that many sites link only to competitors of smythstoys.com. These can then be filtered (by authority score, monthly visits, etc.) to find the best outreach opportunities.
This process uses the Semrush link-building tool suite to find relevant competitors and provide a list of sites that link to your competitors (but not you), thereby implementing your link management workflow. Here’s another demonstration of how to do it.
How to email prospects directly from within Semrush
Once you have found a list of prospects backlink gapyou can send emails directly from within Semrush, no need to open your inbox in a new window.
