Just when you thought John Mueller of Google was done answering your subdomain SEO question – well – now you have a new social platform – so… John is Mastodon, posting content to the main www I said you should use subdomains instead of . .
John wrote in Mastodon that if you think subdomain content can exist independently of www, you’ll probably use subdomains over www. “My take on subdomains is that it depends on what you’re trying to do. Is it content meant to be tightly connected to the main site? Then put it on the main site. If the content stands on its own is a good subdomain.”
He also shared that there are more technical considerations to consider besides SEO. “There are also technical side effects of subdomains that can complicate things a bit: verification in search console, tracking in analytics, DNS, hosting, security, CSP, etc.,” he said.
Later in that thread, John added: As part of the main site. These are different situations with different results. ”
Here’s an update from a Googler for using subdomains for parts of your site or sticking with www.
