How do you know which issues are okay to negotiate in business? Quora: a place to gain and share knowledge, helping people learn from others and understand the world better.
answer by Hunter Ray Barker, co-founder of Bullfrog Digital Marketing Agency & SEO Companyupon Quora:
Business negotiations can be tricky business. Especially since you have no idea what might “offend” the parties you are negotiating with!
You want to make sure you get the best possible deal for your company, but you don’t want to rock the boat too much and end up in a bad situation or accidentally burn a bridge.
So how do we know which issues to negotiate?
Here are some general guidelines:
- First, remember that it is not all Negotiable. Some are fixed and cannot be changed. For example, if you are negotiating a contract, the other party may not compromise on certain terms. In this case, it’s best to just accept them as they are and move on.
- Second, try to focus on the big picture. Don’t get so caught up in the details of the negotiation that you lose sight of what you’re trying to achieve. For example, if you’re negotiating a salary, it’s important to remember that you’re not only looking for higher numbers, but also job satisfaction, security, and other benefits. This should not be “aggressive” to the opponent. If so, you better hit the road!
- Finally, don’t be afraid to walk away from a negotiation if things aren’t going your way, or if you can’t shake off the fearful feelings you have inside. Sometimes the best thing you can do is simply walk away and come back later when everyone has had time to calm down and think about what they really want.
